How Age Is Calculated
The calculator finds the calendar difference between your date of birth and the reference date. It counts complete years, then complete months within the remaining period, and finally the leftover days — the same way you'd count age by hand using a calendar, accounting for different month lengths and leap years.
Worked example:for a date of birth of 29 February 2000 (a leap day) checked against 1 March 2026, the calculator counts 26 complete years first. Because 2026 isn't a leap year, it treats the birthday as landing on 28 February, so the age on 1 March 2026 is 26 years, 0 months, 1 day — not an error, just correct leap-year handling.
Leap years:a year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400 (so 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 wasn't). This affects how many days fall in February for any February-to-March span in your age calculation, which is why calendar-based counting — not a simple days ÷ 365.25 estimate — gives the accurate result.
