Conversion Formulas Used
Length and weight conversions use a common base unit. Length is converted through meters, and weight through kilograms: every unit has a fixed multiplier that converts it to the base unit, and the result is converted value = (amount × from-unit factor) ÷ to-unit factor. For example, 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters and 1 mile = 1,609.344 meters, so converting length or weight is a simple multiply-then-divide operation.
Length worked example: 10 km in miles = (10 × 1000) ÷ 1609.344 ≈ 6.21 miles. Length units are commonly used for everything from map distances (km, mile) to construction and tailoring measurements (cm, inch, foot).
Weight worked example: 5 kg in pounds = (5 × 1) ÷ 0.453592 ≈ 11.02 lb. Weight conversions are useful for everything from cooking (g, ounce) to shipping and body weight (kg, pound, tonne).
Temperature is different — it is not linear, so a simple multiply-by-factor approach doesn't work. Instead, each conversion first converts the input to Celsius as an intermediate step, then converts from Celsius to the target unit:
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: F = C × 9/5 + 32
- Celsius to Kelvin: K = C + 273.15
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: C = (F − 32) × 5/9
- Kelvin to Celsius: C = K − 273.15
Temperature worked example: 37°C in Fahrenheit = 37 × 9/5 + 32 = 66.6 + 32 = 98.6°F (a healthy human body temperature).
