GST Formulas Used
Goods and Services Tax (GST)is India's unified indirect tax on the supply of goods and services, charged at one of five standard slabs: 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%, depending on the item or service.
- Add GST (amount excludes GST): GST Amount = Amount × (Rate ÷ 100). Final Price = Amount + GST Amount.
- Remove GST (amount includes GST): Original Price = Amount ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). GST Amount = Amount − Original Price.
- CGST / SGST split: For a sale within the same state (intra-state), the GST amount is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST) — each is GST Amount ÷ 2. For a sale between two different states (inter-state), the entire GST amount is instead charged as one tax called Integrated GST (IGST), with no CGST/SGST split.
Worked example — Add GST: A product priced at ₹10,000 (excluding GST) attracts 18% GST. GST Amount = 10,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹1,800. Final Price = 10,000 + 1,800 = ₹11,800. For an intra-state sale, this splits into CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900.
Worked example — Remove GST: An invoice shows ₹11,800 as the final, GST-inclusive amount at 18% GST. Original Price = 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000. GST Amount = 11,800 − 10,000 = ₹1,800, again splitting into CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900 for an intra-state sale.
